A lovely all-over repeat of boteh motifs runs the length of this rug. Small dark blue boteh motifs cover the burgundy field along its full length, an all-over repeat with no central medallion. The splendid warm gray main border is wide, carrying sharp geometric forms in dark blue and red. Narrow dark blue guard stripes with small red marks edge it on both sides. Wear has thinned the pile across much of the field; fine lines cross the surface and the white foundation shows through in places. It holds a steady rhythm in a narrow passage, balancing the burgundy ground against the cool blue drawing. At 3'3" by 10'4", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Arak rugs
The town of Arak dates only from 1808, when it was founded as Sultanabad, a name the carpet trade kept. The Swiss firm Ziegler began there in the mid-1870s with 40 looms, and by 1894 had 1,200 in the town and 1,500 more in the surrounding villages. Known historically as Sultanabad, Arak in central Persia was the center of one of the country’s largest weaving districts. Surrounding villages supplied the market under their own names, with an all-over floral field and a restrained palette as the shared character. Here the boteh are scattered evenly from end to end, with no single figure gathering the pattern. Its worn, mottled surface lets the dense repeat read as soft texture. The angular border sets a rigid edge around the curved field motifs.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
