About this rug

A dense herati lattice covers the field of this amazing runner. At a distance the field reads as deep burgundy, though it is a dense herati lattice of red, cream, rust and touches of pale green on indigo. There is no central medallion, only small cream diamonds and flowers set along the center line. No spandrels break the lattice at the corners. A handsome cream main border carries red and green diamonds, gold leaves and hooked brown vines. Narrow red guard stripes with small cream and blue figures, edged in black, frame it on both sides. The pile is full over the field and each border. It suits a long passage, where the cream border lifts the dark field. At 3'4" by 10'3", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Arak rugs

By 1913 Arak, then called Sultanabad, had become the center of a great rug industry controlled by Europeans and Americans. Its dyes were said to have perhaps the most extensive color scheme in Persia. Known historically as Sultanabad, Arak in central Persia was the center of one of the country’s largest weaving districts. Surrounding villages supplied the market under their own names, with an all-over floral field and a restrained palette as the shared character. This runner keeps the all-over field, with a lattice of small flowers filling its whole length instead of a central focus. Its palette is not restrained: red and indigo sit hard against each other, opened by cream and rust.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
