A pointed diamond medallion with a darker core makes this a charming rug. At the center, a gorgeous pointed diamond medallion with a darker core sits on a burgundy field crowded with small boteh forms and rosettes in rose, green and cream. Dark corner pieces fill the angles with angular motifs. The main border runs deep navy, carrying spaced red palmettes and cream accents. Narrow guard stripes of camel and brown geometric lines frame the outer edge. The pile is low in patches across the face, and the foundation shows through in a few places. The dense drawing suits a corridor, where the dark border frames the long red center. At 3'7" by 10', it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Zanjan rugs
Soltaniyeh, in the province of Zanjan, was the capital of the Mongol Ilkhanid dynasty, and the Mausoleum of Oljaytu was built there between 1302 and 1312. Its 50-meter dome, covered in turquoise-blue faience, is the earliest double-shelled dome surviving in Persia. Zanjan sits on the road between Tabriz and Hamedan in northwestern Persia, and its village weaving borrows from both. The designs are geometric and the formats run long, which is why so many Zanjan pieces are runners. These are working rugs rather than showpieces. This piece keeps that angular style in its central diamond and sharp border patterns. A single figure at the middle stands in place of a chain of medallions, in a field filled with small motifs.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
