Small boteh motifs repeat in rows across the length of this lovely rug. Worked on a burgundy field, rows of small boteh motifs in near-black and tan repeat across the length. There is no central medallion, only this dense all-over pattern of the paisley leaf-drop. The splendid main border runs tan with angular figures in black and red. Narrow guard stripes carry a sawtooth line and a dark band of small diamonds. The pile is worn low in horizontal streaks across the whole field, where the red turns paler and the weave shows through, while the border keeps more pile. Its deep red weight and tan frame suit a passage well. At 3'8" by 9'7", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Botteh rugs
Mughal emperors promoted and exported textiles decorated with the boteh, which were much appreciated in Europe. In termeh, a luxurious woven cloth of Persia, the boteh was the most common design. Not a place but a motif, botteh is the teardrop with the bent tip that Europe later borrowed and called paisley. The boteh is the organizing figure of rugs cataloged this way, repeated across the field in rows. This runner keeps that strict repetition, filling the whole field with the small teardrops. Hard angular geometry fills the border rather than the field’s soft leaf shape.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
