About this rug

Rows of red boteh fill a near-black ground on this charming rug. At the center, rows of red boteh fill a near-black ground, so the field reads deep red from across the room. The boteh repeat in a tight diagonal lattice, with no central medallion. A wide red border carries angular figures in gray and black. Narrow guard stripes of dark brown with small red leaves, and a red line dotted in gray, frame the border. The pile is full over the field and shorter in the border. It suits a narrow passage, where the red and black pattern leads the eye along the length. At 3'7" by 9'11", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Botteh rugs

Mughal emperors promoted and exported textiles decorated with the boteh, which were much appreciated in Europe. In termeh, a luxurious woven cloth of Persia, the boteh was the most common design. Botteh is a motif, not a place: the teardrop with the bent tip that Europe later borrowed and called paisley. Rugs cataloged this way carry the boteh as their organizing figure, repeated in rows across the field. This runner follows that rule, with small boteh packed in dense rows across the whole field. Its boteh are angular, closer to diamonds with a bent tip than to full teardrops.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
