About this rug

This delightful runner covers its deep red field with rows of small boteh in near-black and steel blue. At the center, rows of small boteh, the paisley leaf-drop, in near-black and steel blue cover a deep red field. The red shifts in tone in soft horizontal bands from one end to the other. The design is an all-over repeat with no medallion to gather the eye, and no corner pieces. The main border is cream, set with angular figures in red and navy. Narrow guard stripes in navy carry small cream diamonds along both sides. Pile stays full in the field and in the border. The cream border lightens the long red run, and the runner suits a bright passage. At 3'10" by 10'4", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Arak rugs

In the late 19th century the Ziegler company of Arak, then called Sultanabad, was the biggest exporter of oriental carpets from Persia. It had its rugs made less complex than traditional Persian carpets, so that they would not look out of place in European homes. Arak in central Persia, known historically as Sultanabad, was the center of one of the largest weaving districts in the country. The surrounding villages supplied the market under their own names, and the shared character is an all-over floral field and a restrained palette. This runner keeps the all-over field, with small boteh repeated down the whole length instead of gathered at a center. Hard angular figures in red and navy sit on a cream border instead of floral lines.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
