A single diamond medallion and rows of small boteh make this a charming rug. Across a burgundy field, rows of small cream and teal boteh repeat from end to end. A single beautiful diamond medallion sits at the center, its steel blue ground holding a rust cross and cream hooks. The main border is pale, carrying hooked motifs in brick, teal and near-black. Narrow guard stripes in steel blue and cream edge it on either side. Wear has thinned the pile in spots across the length, and the red reads paler there. It suits a narrow passage, the cool blue medallion breaking the long run of warm red. At 2'11" by 9'9", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Arak rugs
The biggest exporter of oriental carpets from Persia in the late 19th century was the Ziegler company of Arak, the town then called Sultanabad. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, counted a hundred hamlets and villages within a day’s journey of Sultanabad weaving rugs for its market. Arak in central Persia, once known as Sultanabad, was the center of one of the largest weaving districts in the country. The villages around it sold under their own names, and what they share is an all-over floral field and a restrained palette. This runner keeps that all-over repeat in its field of small boteh, stretching the pattern down the full length. The single diamond medallion gathers the blue and rust at the center instead of leaving the ground bare.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
