About this rug

Stepped gul motifs in dark brown and cream repeat across this charming runner. Set within a burgundy field, rows of beautiful stepped gul motifs repeat in dark brown and cream. No single medallion holds the center; instead, the geometric figures run in strict columns down the length of the runner. A wide main border carries linked octagons and diamonds in red outlined in dark brown, closed by narrow lines of small zigzags. The pile is low across the center, where the red reads paler against the darker ground. It suits a narrow passage where the deep red and earth tones can ground the space. At 3'1" by 9'4", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Torkaman rugs

Turkmen women wove the furnishings of the tent: carpets for floors and entryways, and smaller pieces made into bags and animal trappings. Among the Turkmen special carpets are woven for the birth of a child, for weddings, and for prayer and mourning. In northeastern Persia, Turkmen weavers keep to a strict grid of gul motifs, the same octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. That sounds austere, yet it is the opposite, because the drawing never changes and all the life is in the color. This runner keeps that strict grid in its columns of identical figures. The cream and brown of each gul stand clearly against the burgundy ground.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
