Rows of octagonal gul motifs in near-black repeat down this charming runner. On a deep red field, rows of octagonal gul motifs in near-black repeat down the length in two columns. Small cross-shaped figures sit between the guls, filling the open ground with fine near-black lines. The field has no central medallion, keeping the focus on the strict vertical grid. A gorgeous main border of near-black diamonds on a red ground frames the design, flanked by narrow guard stripes with small geometric marks. The pile has thinned in a few patches across the red, where small pale specks show. It anchors a passage, with the strong red and near-black geometry holding the space. At 2'7" by 9'2", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Torkaman rugs
A Yomud main carpet of the mid-1850s at the Cleveland Museum of Art has an aubergine ground, and the decorated skirts at each end are its rarest feature. A main carpet was the prized possession of the round Turkmen tent. In northeastern Persia, Turkmen weavers keep to a strict grid of gul motifs, the same octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. That sounds austere, yet it is the opposite, because the drawing never changes and all the life is in the color. This runner keeps that strict grid, with the octagonal figures set in two columns down the red ground, and a diamond lattice runs along the border.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
