Rows of boteh motifs in rust and navy repeat across this charming rug. Rows of small boteh motifs in rust and navy cover the deep red field as a continuous repeat, with no central piece to gather the design. A splendid dark navy border frames the length, carrying a geometric chain of rust triangles. A narrow light stripe separates this wide frame from the inner drawing. The pile is low in places, and the white foundation shows through at the lowest points. It grounds the warm red and rust notes along a narrow passage. At 2'6" by 9'5", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Arak rugs
The biggest exporter of oriental carpets from Persia in the late 19th century was the Ziegler company of Arak, the town then called Sultanabad. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, counted a hundred hamlets and villages within a day’s journey of Sultanabad weaving rugs for its market. Arak in central Persia, known historically as Sultanabad, was the center of one of the largest weaving districts in the country. The surrounding villages supplied the market under their own names, and the shared character is an all-over floral field and a restrained palette. This runner keeps that all-over layout, spreading the small motifs across the whole length instead of gathering them at a center. The deep red ground carries the rust and navy drawing in a steady, repeating rhythm down the hall.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
