About this rug

Three large hexagonal forms make this an amazing rug. Three large hexagonal forms stack along the middle of a deep red field, colored in terracotta, orange and cream. Each beautiful medallion holds small geometric blossoms and hooked shapes and is edged with a stepped outline in dark blue. Inside, small flowers, crescent shapes and slim vine motifs in rose, cream and dark blue sit on the terracotta ground. The open red field around them is plain, with a few tiny cream marks. Full pile covers the face. It fits a hallway, letting the warm orange centers glow against the strong red ground. At 2'7" by 8'5", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Ardabil rugs

The Safavid shahs descended from a long line of Sufi shaikhs who kept their headquarters at Ardabil. The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds a 16th-century carpet from the shrine of Shaikh Safi at Ardabil, the dynastic shrine of the Safavid shahs. High in the northwest of Persia, close to the Azerbaijani border, sits Ardabil. District weaving is firmly geometric: stepped medallions, hooked borders, strong contrast. Long formats are common. This rug keeps the extended shape and the stepped layout of its three linked hexagons. The contrast between the deep red field and the dark blue outlines defines the drawing clearly.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
