Two large cross-shaped medallions, each holding a camel panel with a red core, anchor the center of this delightful rug. Across a deep red field, a column of stepped geometric forms runs the length of the rug in near-black and cream. Two large cross-shaped medallions anchor the center, each framed in near-black and holding a camel panel with a red core and small leafy sprigs, and a stepped near-black medallion with a red and pink diamond core closes the column at one end. Small stepped diamonds and feather-like sprigs sit in the red between them. The main border is black cherry, carrying a terracotta zigzag, between thin guard bands in red and dark brown. The pile is full across the whole face, and the angular drawing stays sharp. It suits a narrow passage where the red and the near-black can lead the eye. At 2'11" by 9'10", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Ardabil rugs
The Ardabil Carpet in London, made for the shrine of the Safavid shahs at Ardabil, carries the year 946 in its inscription, equivalent to 1539-40. After an earthquake damaged the shrine it was sold to a Manchester firm, and the Victoria and Albert Museum bought it in 1893. High in the northwest of Persia, close to the Azerbaijani border, sits Ardabil. District weaving is firmly geometric: stepped medallions, hooked borders, strong contrast. Long formats and runners are common. This runner keeps the stepped medallions and the strong contrast, with red set against near-black. Cream lines trace every step of the near-black frames. Instead of the hooked type often seen in Ardabil, this border runs a plain zigzag.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
