About this rug

Star-shaped crosses in olive and rust run through the cream main border of this wonderful rug. On a deep red field, three large geometric medallions stack down the center, each ringed by stepped zigzag edges. The middle one is cream and rust, and the outer two are dark navy with orange accents. Small stylized trees, flower heads and tiny hooked marks scatter across the open red ground between them. A beautiful cream main border carries star-shaped crosses in olive and rust, inside a white zigzag band with dark triangles. Full pile covers the field and borders, and the drawing stays sharp. It brings a strong tribal line to a narrow space, and the dark blue centers cool the warm red. At 3'5" by 9'11", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Shiraz rugs

The Qashqai tribal confederacy was formed in the late 18th century, during or just after the rule of Karim Khan Zand in Shiraz. The Qashqai have the reputation of making the best rugs of the Shiraz district, the brightest in color, with rich blues and reds. Rugs sold under the name Shiraz were woven by tribal and village weavers around the market city of Fars province in southern Persia. Geometric and often asymmetric drawing is the rule, with small stylized animals and birds turning up in the field. No two are laid out in quite the same way. This runner keeps that geometric hand, with stepped outlines and small tree motifs filling the spaces between the large forms. Three distinct medallions are stacked along the length in place of one repeated figure.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
