About this rug

Three stepped diamond medallions run in a column down this charming runner. The deep red field carries a column of three stepped diamond medallions, the outer two on cream and the center one in dark burgundy. Small geometric motifs fill the red ground between these central forms. The main border is cream with lovely dark blue and red rosettes, framed by a narrow inner band of red and blue blocks. A narrow outer stripe closes the edge. A few patches of the pile have thinned, and white specks show across the surface. In a narrow passage, the cream border keeps the heavy red from closing in the space. At 3'1" by 7'5", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Ardabil rugs

The Safavid shahs descended from a long line of Sufi shaikhs who kept their headquarters at Ardabil. The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds a 16th-century carpet from the shrine of Shaikh Safi at Ardabil, the dynastic shrine of the Safavid shahs. Ardabil sits high in the northwest of Persia, close to the Azerbaijani border. The weaving of the district is firmly geometric, with stepped medallions and strong contrast. This runner keeps that stepped outline in its three central diamonds and the hard contrast between the red ground and the cream figures. The geometric drawing extends into the border, where blocky rosettes repeat along the length in dark blue and red.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
