About this rug

This lovely rug sets three stepped geometric medallions down the center. Over a deep red field, three stepped geometric medallions run down the center in camel outline. Slender flowering stems topped with delicate pink blossoms rise from the red ground between and beside them. The main border is muted pink and tan, carrying navy hooked motifs and small rosettes. Narrow guard stripes in camel frame the border on both sides. The pile is low in places, and white specks show where the foundation appears. The strong red and camel geometry draws the eye along the runner’s length. At 3'6" by 7'10", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Ardabil rugs

The Safavid shahs descended from a long line of Sufi shaikhs who kept their headquarters at Ardabil. The famous Ardabil Carpet has a twin, made for the same shrine at Ardabil and kept today in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Ardabil sits high in the northwest of Persia, close to the Azerbaijani border. The weaving of the district is firmly geometric, with stepped medallions, hooked borders and strong contrast. Runners and long formats are common. This runner keeps that firm geometry, with three stepped medallions stacked along the length. The navy hooked motifs in the border and the angular stems in the field set camel and pink against the deep red.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
