About this rug

The central column of diamond medallions gives this runner a charming look. A deep red field is shaped by a bold zigzag of salmon and dark brown triangles framing a central column of diamond medallions. Each diamond holds a small square core in cream, dark brown or slate blue, most with a tiny rosette, and small arrow shapes in salmon and dark brown sit alongside. A splendid main border of tan and brown carries small pink and cream marks, between narrow stripes of slate blue. Pile runs low in spots on the red, where pale streaks show. The vivid red and brown forms fill a narrow passage without weighing down the space. At 3'5" by 7'10", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

Cyrus the Great took Ecbatana, the ancient city under Hamedan, in 550 BCE, and Alexander the Great took it in 330 BCE. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, noted that old Hamedan runners sometimes ran twenty feet or more in length. Hamedan is a weaving city and region in western Persia, and for generations hundreds of villages around it have sent rugs to its markets. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses, so many of the best vintage runners come from here. This runner fits that long format, with a single column of diamonds running down the red ground. The red stays vivid, and the cream and dark brown shapes stand out clearly against it.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
