Three large stepped hexagons run down the center of this charming runner. On a deep red field, three large stepped hexagons run down the center, outlined in gray beige zigzags and filled with dark teal and rose motifs. Small geometric motifs fill the open red space between these central shapes. The gorgeous main border is dark charcoal, carrying rows of small squares in dusty rose, teal and gray beige. Narrow guard stripes in gray beige and deep red line the edges of this wide band. The pile is worn broadly across the face, and the foundation shows through the red. It suits a narrow passage, where the strong red and dark border hold their own. At 2'9" by 6'5", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Ardabil rugs
The Safavid shahs descended from a long line of Sufi shaikhs who kept their headquarters at Ardabil. The famous Ardabil Carpet has a twin, made for the same shrine at Ardabil and kept today in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Ardabil sits high in the northwest of Persia, close to the Azerbaijani border. The weaving of the district is firmly geometric: stepped medallions, hooked borders, strong contrast. Runners and long formats are common. This piece keeps that geometric character, with stepped outlines and hard edges rather than curling vines. The palette has faded to deep red and charcoal, leaving behind the vivid madder often seen in this area.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
