About this rug

Columns of stepped diamonds and hexagon shapes cover this lovely rug from end to end. Over a red field, columns of stepped diamonds and hexagon shapes repeat in rows of near-black and cream, with a small diamond at each center. Small rosettes sit inside the diamonds, and the pattern covers the ground from end to end, with no single focal point. A narrow cream stripe edges the border, and a zigzag drawing in near-black and red repeats along the border at each end and side. The pile thins in places, and the field looks paler there. Heavy red and black tones make this piece a warm accent beside a bed or in an entry. At 2'9" by 6'3", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Baluch rugs

In Afghanistan most Baluch lived until recently in tents or small villages close to the western border. Older Baluch rugs are typically dark, in reds, browns and blues with touches of white, and many have long striped aprons at both ends. The semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan are the source of Baluch weaving. The classic palette uses aubergine, deep madder and indigo so deep it reads as brown. Because the looms were portable, the formats run small, and the designs repeat a handful of motifs carried from camp to camp. This rug has a red ground and a near-black drawing. The stepped diamonds repeat in steady columns along the body.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
