About this rug

Two columns of diamond guls make this a charming runner. On a deep red field, two columns of handsome diamond guls run the length, each holding cream, orange and navy geometry. Small stepped crosses sit between the rows on the open ground. The border is deep red, set with cream and navy geometric figures, and narrow zigzag stripes edge it on both sides. Thin spots appear in the pile across the field, and pale flecks show where the weave has worn. Cream notes in the border lighten the red so it does not weigh down a narrow hall. At 2'11" by 6'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Torkaman rugs

A main carpet was the most important and expensive weaving of every Turkmen tribe, and the main floor covering of the tent. A Turkmen girl was already an experienced weaver by the time she was old enough to marry, often shortly before she turned twenty. In northeastern Persia, Turkmen weavers keep to a strict grid of gul motifs, the same octagonal figure repeated across the field. The drawing barely changes, so the interest lies in the color. This rug keeps that grid, with the diamond shapes set in even pairs down the red ground. The orange and cream inside each shape stand out against the navy outlines.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
