About this rug

A large stepped diamond medallion sits on the deep red field of this charming rug. Deep red fills the field, scattered with near-black geometric tree motifs. A large stepped diamond medallion sits at the center, its near-black ground filled with cream and red geometric shapes. Smaller pendants in gray and cream anchor the top and bottom of the central axis. Beautiful near-black corner spandrels with cream outlines frame the field ends, and the medallion pendants echo its stepped edge. The rug runs to the edge without a main border or guard stripes. Pale specks show where the red ground has worn low in a few patches. It grounds a narrow passage with its strong red and near-black geometric drawing. At 2'10" by 6'11", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Ferdos rugs

Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, described Khorasan as almost entirely desert, with its small towns and villages set in scattered oases. He traced the variety of its patterns partly to weavers copying the rugs that pilgrims brought to Mashhad from other provinces. In eastern Persia’s Khorasan region, Ferdos shares a weaving belt with Birjand and Mashhad. Its rugs tend toward the curvilinear drawing of eastern Persia, with repeating floral fields instead of one dominant medallion, on a palette of madder red and indigo. This rug keeps the red ground but sets a stepped geometric medallion at the center. The near-black tree motifs repeat on either side of it.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
