About this rug

A single column of eight stepped octagonal medallions on a deep red field makes this a lovely rug. Worked on a deep red field, eight stepped octagonal medallions run down the center in a single column. Each medallion holds a splendid slate blue and cream geometric star with a small red core, framed by hooked lines. A near-black band forms the main border, dotted with pretty rosettes in rust, red, cream and steel blue. Narrow guard stripes of orange and a diamond lattice in blue and red edge the field on both sides. The pile is full across the face, though small white specks dot the red ground. It brings a strong vertical rhythm to a narrow space, the cool slate blue centers breaking up the warm red. At 2'11" by 7'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Saveh rugs

The story goes that Saveh held one of the greatest libraries of the East until the Mongols destroyed it on their first invasion of Persia. An English consul named Abbott, who passed through Saveh in 1849, called it the most ruinous town he had ever seen. Saveh lies between Tehran and Arak in central Persia, on old caravan ground. The village weaving here sits between the geometric north and the floral center: medallions with straight edges, but filled with vine and blossom. This runner keeps the straight-edged medallions, with hard geometric fret and stars where the region’s weavers often put vine and blossom. The only florals are the small scattered blossoms in the border.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
