A stepped diamond medallion in navy sits on the red field of this charming runner. Set within a deep red field, small geometric figures in navy, cream and green scatter around a central axis. A large stepped diamond medallion in navy holds a red core, with smaller diamond pendants extending above and below. Beautiful cream spandrels fill the corners, packed with rectangular panels and hooked motifs in red and green. The main border carries small geometric forms in red and blue, closed by narrow stripes of zigzag lines. A few patches of thinned pile show the weave underneath. It grounds a narrow passage, where the strong red and navy hold their own against pale floors. At 2'10" by 6'4", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Zanjan rugs
At Soltaniyeh in the province of Zanjan, its capital, the Mongol Ilkhanid dynasty built the Mausoleum of Oljaytu between 1302 and 1312. Its 50-meter dome, covered in turquoise-blue faience, is the earliest double-shelled dome surviving in Persia. Zanjan sits on the road between Tabriz and Hamedan in northwestern Persia, and its village weaving borrows from both. The designs are geometric and the formats run long, which is why so many Zanjan pieces are long and narrow. These are working rugs rather than showpieces. This rug follows that geometric drawing, with a bold angular outline around the central figure on the red ground. The cream corners and scattered fills match the village patterns noted for this region.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
