This charming runner has a dark blue hexagonal medallion on a burgundy field. At the center, a beautiful dark blue hexagonal medallion with a cream diamond core sits on a burgundy field scattered with small geometric motifs in deep red and ivory. Stepped points extend up and down from the medallion into the surrounding space. The main border is brown, edged with narrow stripes in red and dark blue. White specks appear in several patches, where the pile is low. It anchors a narrow passage, letting the deep blue center hold focus against the warm red ground. At 2'9" by 6'3", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Zanjan rugs
The province of Zanjan holds Soltaniyeh, once the capital of the Mongol Ilkhanid dynasty, where the Mausoleum of Oljaytu was built between 1302 and 1312. Scholars have described the building as anticipating the Taj Mahal. Zanjan sits on the road between Tabriz and Hamedan in northwestern Persia, and its village weaving borrows from both. The designs are geometric and the formats run long. These are working rugs rather than showpieces. Here a stepped medallion sits hard against the field, and its dark blue center contrasts with the surrounding burgundy.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
