Three octagonal panels stand in a column down this charming rug. Across a deep red field, a column of three octagonal panels runs the length of the rug. Each panel holds a central diamond with a quartered black and red core, ringed by dainty near-black rosettes. Stepped cream lines separate the panels along the sides. The main border is burgundy, carrying a repeat of near-black geometric motifs with small teal centers. Narrow cream guard stripes frame the border on both sides. A few patches show the pile thinned, with white specks where the foundation appears. Red and near-black stay close together, suited to a narrow passage. At 2'5" by 5'4", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Baluch rugs
Rugs of the tribal kind, the Baluch among them, are generally small and are woven on horizontal looms laid out on the ground. Among the Baluch a bride and her mother wove the balisht, a pillow often meant for the dowry, and balishts were usually woven in pairs. Baluch weaving comes from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. The formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a handful of motifs carried between camps. Here the panels and borders hold that small scale. Red and near-black sit tightly together across the whole face.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
