About this rug

A star medallion with a dark brown core stands at the center of this charming rug. Geometric figures in cream, dark brown and steel blue cover the deep red field. A central star medallion holds a dark brown core within a cream outline, with beautiful diamond shapes extending along the vertical axis. Large cream spandrels occupy the four corners, filled with stepped motifs that mirror the center. The main border is dark brown, carrying a repeat of small geometric forms in rust and tan. Narrow guard stripes in gray and red frame this dark brown band on both sides. The pile is full over the face. It anchors a narrow passage, the cream corners lifting the heavy red ground. At 2'3" by 5'9", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

In the second half of the 12th century the Seljuq sultans made Hamedan their capital, and it remained so for 50 years. The Mongols destroyed Hamedan about 1220 and Timur sacked it in 1386, and the city was partly restored in the 17th century. Hamedan is a city and weaving region in western Persia, and hundreds of villages around the city have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses. This piece retains the elongated shape and rustic design, with rows of angular motifs across the red ground. The cream spandrels and central star shape set a clear structure against the dense pattern.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
