About this rug

Two pointed near-black medallions, each with a cream rosette at its core, make this a remarkable runner. Set in a deep red field, scrolling vines carry curled ivory leaves and small blossoms in rose, sky blue and olive. Two pointed near-black medallions anchor the length, each holding a dainty cream rosette at its core. The gorgeous main border is ivory, worked with a red zigzag line and small deep red flower heads. Narrow guard stripes in pink and green zigzag edge it on both sides. The pile is full. Tight drawing keeps the bright red and near-black medallions steady along this narrow rug. At 2'3" by 6'11", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Qom rugs

Britannica calls the silk carpets woven for the tomb of Shah Abbas II, who died in 1666, in the shrine at Qom the last really fine achievements of Persian weaving. Qom in central Persia began weaving relatively recently, in the twentieth century, and went straight to the fine end of the trade. The designs borrow freely from every other Persian tradition: panel gardens, medallions, repeating boteh. The drawing is tight and precisely resolved. This long accent rug shows that tight drawing in its scrolling vines and two pointed center medallions. The deep red ground gives the near-black medallions and ivory leaves clear contrast down the full length.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
