Five hexagonal guls in a column make this a wonderful rug. A column of five hexagonal guls runs down the deep red field, each outlined in dark green and cream with an orange center. Small green stems link the guls on the red ground. The beautiful main border carries a chain of smaller cream and orange guls on a red ground, framed by narrow guard stripes of zigzag lines in orange, black and cream. The pile is full across the face. It brings a strong red line to a narrow passage, cooled by the green outlines. At 2'7" by 6'4", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Torkaman rugs
Each Turkmen tribe had its own main gul, its most important symbol, and the flag of Turkmenistan shows the five guls of the five main tribes. The name Bukhara was given to Turkmen rugs in error in the first half of the 20th century, though few Turkmen live around that city. Torkaman weavers in northeastern Persia work to a strict repeating grid of gul motifs, one octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. Because the drawing never changes, all the life is in the color. This rug keeps that strict grid, with a column of hexagonal guls set hard against the red ground. The dark green outlines and orange centers shift against the deep red field as you move past it.

Orders are processed and shipped within one to four days and most arrive within about ten days, sometimes as fast as three depending on your location, carefully wrapped, with tracking sent the moment your rug leaves us.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
