About this rug

A large serrated hexagonal medallion sits on the deep red field of this remarkable rug. Small geometric motifs in navy, teal and cream scatter over the deep red field. A large serrated hexagonal medallion sits at the center, its near-black ground framing a red diamond core with a teal flower. Hooked arms in red and teal reach out from the medallion above and below. The main border is camel, carrying a dainty vine of navy and teal leaves, flanked by guard stripes of red and navy zigzags. Full pile covers the face. It grounds a narrow passage, and the dark medallion anchors the bright red field. At 2'11" by 6'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Zanjan rugs

Soltaniyeh, in the province of Zanjan, was the capital of the Mongol Ilkhanid dynasty, and the Mausoleum of Oljaytu was built there between 1302 and 1312. Scholars have described the building as anticipating the Taj Mahal. In northwestern Persia, on the road between Tabriz and Hamedan, Zanjan has a village weaving that borrows from both. Geometric designs and long formats are the norm, which is why so many Zanjan pieces are runners. They are working rugs rather than showpieces. This narrow rug keeps that geometric character in its serrated medallion and angular field motifs. The strong contrast between the near-black medallion ground and the red field sets the drawing hard.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
