A lattice of stepped diamonds repeats all over this charming rug. A splendid lattice of stepped diamonds in near-black, rust and cream covers the burgundy field. No central medallion sits in this all-over repeat, where small geometric figures fill every space between the near-black lines. A narrow band of small figures closes each end. Wear has thinned the pile through the middle, leaving pale areas of foundation. It anchors a tight corridor, where the deep red and near-black geometry sit calmly underfoot. At 2'6" by 6'4", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Baluch rugs
Older Baluch rugs are typically dark, in reds, browns and blues with touches of white, and many have long striped aprons at both ends. A 19th-century Baluch carpet in the Victoria and Albert Museum has two large red medallions shaped like animals with legs, each holding a small tree. Semi-nomadic Baluch groups wove in eastern Persia, and portable looms kept their rugs narrow. Here, the stepped diamonds march down the full length. Rust and cream accents lift the burgundy ground.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
