Five separate medallions in dark blue, cream and burgundy fill the center of this wonderful rug. Across a deep red field, five separate medallions run down the center in dark blue, cream and burgundy. Each figure holds a different shape, from stepped crosses to a central diamond filled with small checks. Small geometric motifs scatter across the ground between these main forms. This long format has no corner pieces. A gorgeous near-black main border holds a line of dainty star rosettes in red and blue. Narrow guard stripes in orange and rust with small triangles frame the field on either side. Pile is full over the face, keeping the geometric drawing sharp and clear. It makes a strong vertical line that pulls the eye down a long space. At 2'5" by 8', it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Gharajeh rugs
The best-known pattern of Gharajeh is three geometric medallions, the central one with a latch-hooked outline in a different color and the other two eight-pointed stars. Britannica says the runners of Gharajeh resemble those of Karabagh in the Caucasus but look more Persian. Gharajeh, also spelled Karaja, is a village district in northwestern Persia, north of Heriz. Its signature is a column of separate medallions down a narrow field, each a different shape, rather than a single centered one. That layout suits long formats, and runners are the pieces the district is known for. This piece follows that tradition exactly, stacking five distinct figures from end to end. The sharp, stepped outlines and the mix of dark blue and cream against the red ground keep the drawing bold and graphic.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
