About this rug

This delightful rug has a near-black diamond medallion at the center of a deep red field. At the center, a near-black diamond medallion carries a lattice of pink, red and blue flowers, set in a deep red field. The lozenge narrows to a stepped point at each end. Red spandrels fill the corners, the upper left one a paler salmon, carrying large blossoms in green, blue and pink. The main border is camel, set with a graceful black vine that carries small red and blue flowers. Near-black guard stripes run along both edges of the border. The pile is full. It anchors a narrow passage, the near-black center grounding the bright red ends. At 2'3" by 5'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

In the 5th century BCE the Greek historian Herodotus described Ecbatana, the ancient city under Hamedan, as ringed by seven concentric walls. Several generations ago many rugs from the villages around Hamedan were traded through Mosul, and so were known as Mosul rugs. Hamedan rugs come from hundreds of villages around the western Persian city, and long narrow formats are a specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses. This small rug keeps that narrow shape. A near-black medallion holds a lattice of small flowers, with a red spandrel at each corner and a camel border around the whole.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
