This remarkable rug carries rows of near-black octagonal guls on a deep red field. The deep red field holds rows of handsome near-black octagonal guls filled with cream and blue geometric shapes. Small near-black diamonds sit in the red spaces between the larger figures. The design repeats along the rug with no central medallion or corner spandrels. A narrow border of small cream and near-black triangles edges the field. The pile is full across the red ground and the near-black drawing alike. It suits a narrow passage where the bold red and angular forms can anchor the space. At 2' by 5'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Baluch rugs
A 19th-century rug at Colgate University, attributed to the Bahlul tribal group, repeats diagonal rows of a motif typical of Baluch grain bags. A Baluch bride and her mother wove the balisht, a pillow or grain bag that was often part of the dowry, and such bags were usually woven in pairs. The semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan are the source of Baluch weaving. Because the looms were portable, the formats are small, and the designs repeat a handful of motifs. This rug keeps that small format and the repeating grid of octagonal figures. The deep red ground and near-black outlines give the drawing a strong contrast. Cream and small touches of blue fill the centers of the shapes.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
