Cream hexagons and stepped lozenges run in a column on this lovely rug. A column of cream hexagons and stepped lozenges runs down the burgundy field, set with rust and steel blue geometric forms. The medallions hold dark brown crosses and small olive triangles within their cream grounds. A splendid tan border carries red and black angular motifs, edged by a thin near-black line. A few patches along the column have worn low, and the foundation shows. The dense drawing holds the rust and blue notes tight against the burgundy ground. At 1'10" by 5'3", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

About Gharajeh rugs
The best-known pattern of Gharajeh is three geometric medallions, the central one with a latch-hooked outline in a different color and the other two eight-pointed stars. Britannica says the runners of Gharajeh resemble those of Karabagh in the Caucasus but look more Persian. Gharajeh, also written Karaja, is a village district north of Heriz in northwestern Persia. Its signature is a column of separate medallions running down a narrow field, each one a different shape, rather than a single centered one. This rug keeps that vertical arrangement, stacking distinct geometric cores from end to end. The rust and steel blue accents break up the burgundy ground with sharp, angular contrast.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
