Octagonal gul motifs outlined in red cover the burgundy field of this lovely rug. The field is burgundy, covered by rows of splendid octagonal gul motifs in dark brown, outlined in red. Small stepped squares link the larger motifs in a strict lattice that fills the length. A narrow border of small light crosses between dark lines runs around the edge. A few patches show white specks where the pile is thin. A central medallion never breaks the repeat. It brings a deep, warm rhythm to a narrow passage, the brown geometry grounding the red tones. At 1'11" by 5'3", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Baluch rugs
Britannica notes that the better Baluch rugs are usually ascribed to Khorasan, and that they show little relationship to the Turkmen weaving they are often grouped with. A 19th-century rug at Colgate University, attributed to the Bahlul tribal group, repeats diagonal rows of a motif typical of Baluch grain bags. Baluch weaving comes from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. It has the darkest palette in the Persian repertoire: aubergine, deep madder, and indigo so deep it reads as brown. The formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a handful of motifs carried between camps. Here brown shapes sit firmly on the red lattice. The repeating octagons cover the whole face in a strict grid.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
