Seven stepped hexagons run down this lovely rug in a column. The burgundy field carries a column of seven stepped hexagons down the center, each outlined in cream zigzags and holding a dark red star on a near-black ground. Dark hooked motifs fill the spaces beside the central chain. The splendid main border is deep red, set with near-black hooked forms, and narrow cream guard stripes with a dark zigzag line edge the rug on both sides. The pile is low and even, with small pale specks across the field. The dense drawing holds the dark reds and near-black together in a narrow band. At 1'8" by 5'9", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Baluch rugs
In Afghanistan most Baluch lived until recently in tents or small villages close to the western border. Rugs of the tribal kind, the Baluch among them, are generally small and are woven on horizontal looms laid out on the ground. Baluch weaving comes from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. It has the darkest palette in the Persian repertoire: aubergine, deep madder, and indigo so deep it reads as brown. The formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a handful of motifs carried between camps. This rug keeps that dark palette in its near-black grounds and deep reds. The repeating hexagon chain is one of those carried motifs, worked here in a long, narrow format.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
