About this rug

A column of medallions sits in the cream panel of this charming rug. The outer field is burgundy, with rows of small figures in dark blue and cream repeating down the length. Inside it, a cream panel holds a column of medallions in red and cream, framed by narrow stripes of stepped lines in charcoal and cream. The handsome main border is red, holding a line of small hooked motifs in cream and charcoal. The pile is low in places, and the foundation shows through across the center. At 1'10" by 5'10", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Baluch rugs

In Afghanistan most Baluch lived until recently in tents or small villages close to the western border. A Baluch bride and her mother wove the balisht, a pillow or grain bag that was often part of the dowry, and such bags were usually woven in pairs. Baluch rugs come from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. Formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a few motifs that traveled between camps. This rug keeps that repetition in its column of medallions and its hooked border motifs. The cream panel stands out against the burgundy ground and gives the long format a steady rhythm.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
