About this rug

Two large hexagonal medallions stand in the deep red field of this lovely rug. Angular hooked motifs and stepped forms fill the deep red field, organized around two large hexagonal medallions. Each medallion holds a central cross device in brown and dark blue, flanked by small geometric figures on the red ground. Splendid dark blue spandrels with serrated edges frame the hexagons against the surrounding red space. Narrow bands of dark blue edge the main strip on either side. A few patches of pile have worn low, and pale flecks are scattered about. It grounds a narrow passage, the dark blue accents cooling the heavy red tone. At 2' by 5'9", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Azerbaijan rugs

In 1501 Isma’il Safavi and his Qizilbash warriors took control of Azerbaijan, and in the same year he was crowned the first Safavid shah. The Shahsevan, Turkic nomads of the northwest, carry a name that means those who love the king. Persian Azerbaijan covers the northwestern corner of the country. It is less a single style than a family of village traditions that share a vocabulary: angular medallions, hooked motifs, madder and indigo. This rug keeps that angular vocabulary in its two hexagonal medallions and the hooked lines that frame them. The dark blue and deep red sit hard against one another, with brown details filling the geometric centers.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
