The large stepped medallion of this charming rug is tan and navy. Deep red carries the field, set with a large stepped medallion in tan and navy. Its notched outline frames a navy core with small tan details inside. Splendid navy corner pieces hold small flowers in rust and blue. Tan shapes on the red ground echo the medallion above and below it. A narrow striped band in red, tan and blue edges the ends. The pile is low in places, and white specks show where the weave is thin. The tan shapes stand clear against the red ground in a strong graphic design. At 2'2" by 4'9", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Zanjan rugs
The province of Zanjan holds Soltaniyeh, once the capital of the Mongol Ilkhanid dynasty, where the Mausoleum of Oljaytu was built between 1302 and 1312. Scholars have described the building as anticipating the Taj Mahal. Zanjan sits on the road between Tabriz and Hamedan in northwestern Persia, and its village weaving borrows from both. The designs are geometric and the formats run long. These are working rugs rather than showpieces. This one keeps the geometric drawing and the long format found in the region. Its stepped medallion sits plainly on the red ground.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
