About this rug

Two framed panels each hold a stepped camel motif on this wonderful rug. At the center, two framed panels each hold a stepped camel motif on a red field. Black geometric shapes fill the space around these central rectangles. A splendid horizontal band of three similar camel figures divides the two main sections. The main border carries a row of black geometric emblems on every side and turns each corner with the same figures. The red ground between the panels stays open. Fine guard stripes in dark brown and cream line the inside of the border, and each panel has a small cream medallion at its center. The pile is full. It anchors a narrow passage, and the black geometric forms stand out against the red ground. At 1'10" by 4', it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Baluch rugs

A 19th-century Baluch prayer rug at Colgate University shows a tree of life, with side panels in designs also found in Saryk Turkmen weaving. A 19th-century Baluch carpet in the Victoria and Albert Museum has two large red medallions shaped like animals with legs, each holding a small tree. Baluch rugs come from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. Formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a few motifs that traveled between camps. This rug keeps that small format and the repeated geometric motifs. The red ground carries the black drawing in two framed panels.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
