An all-over repeat of brown rosettes covers this lovely rug. Small brown rosettes and pale sage dots cover the gray brown field in an even, all-over repeat. There is no central medallion, only the steady repeat of small motifs running the length of the rug. One end carries a short panel of stepped brown trees set against the same ground. A narrow tan border frames the piece. The pile is low in places, with pale specks across the face. A full antique wash has brought every color to one warmth, none at strength. The dense drawing keeps the eye moving along the muted brown and sage notes. At 1'10" by 4'5", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Arak rugs
In the late 19th century the Ziegler company of Arak, then called Sultanabad, was the biggest exporter of oriental carpets from Persia. A hundred hamlets and villages within a day’s journey of Sultanabad wove rugs for its market, by the count of Walter Hawley, writing in 1913. Arak in central Persia, known historically as Sultanabad, was the center of one of the largest weaving districts in the country. The surrounding villages supplied the market under their own names, and the shared character is an all-over floral field and a restrained palette. This rug keeps that all-over field and the restrained palette, with the small rosettes repeating across the whole ground. The panel of stepped trees at one end adds a geometric note to the muted brown and sage drawing.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
