About this rug

A large red octagon holds the center of this amazing rug. On a navy field, splendid stepped red medallions with lavender cores run down the center in a vertical column. The central figure is a large red octagon holding a grid of small geometric motifs, linked by narrow connectors to smaller stepped diamonds above and below. Lavender spandrels with red geometric marks fill the four corners of the field. A gorgeous brick border carries a repeating pattern of small cream and navy marks, flanked by narrow guard stripes in brown and black. The pile is full across the face, keeping the deep red and navy distinct. The strong geometric contrast stands clear, and the rug suits a narrow passage. At 2'4" by 5'4", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Zanjan rugs

At Soltaniyeh in the province of Zanjan, its capital, the Mongol Ilkhanid dynasty built the Mausoleum of Oljaytu between 1302 and 1312. Its 50-meter dome, covered in turquoise-blue faience, is the earliest double-shelled dome surviving in Persia. In northwestern Persia, on the road between Tabriz and Hamedan, Zanjan has a village weaving that borrows from both. Geometric designs and long formats are the norm, which is why so many Zanjan pieces are runners. They are working rugs rather than showpieces. This rug keeps the geometric drawing and the long format, with stepped figures set against a navy ground. The deep red motifs stand hard against the navy field, and the brick border frames the design with a consistent geometric edge.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
