A large rust diamond holds a cream medallion on this charming rug. Across a near-black field, a large rust diamond holds a cream geometric medallion with stepped edges. Small rosettes and square motifs in terracotta and olive fill the near-black ground around this central form. The corners carry matching square devices set against the near-black background. A narrow edge of orange and olive zigzags runs along the sides of the diamond. The pile is low in places, with small white marks across the face. The bright cream center stands out sharply against the near-black ground and rust tones. At 2'4" by 5'3", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Saveh rugs
The story goes that Saveh held one of the greatest libraries of the East until the Mongols destroyed it on their first invasion of Persia. The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds paintings by Habiballah of Sava, an older spelling of Saveh, who worked in the years around 1590 to 1610. Saveh lies between Tehran and Arak in central Persia, on old caravan ground. The village weaving here sits between the geometric north and the floral center: medallions with straight edges, but filled with vine and blossom. The palette is warm, built on madder red with cream and indigo alongside. This rug keeps that straight-edged medallion shape and the warm red and cream notes against the near-black ground. The drawing stays firmly geometric, with stepped outlines and blocky rosettes filling the field.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
