About this rug

Three stepped medallions run the length of this wonderful rug. Set within a burgundy field, three stepped medallions run down the length of the runner. The center one has a cream outer ring around a violet core, while the outer two have a violet ground with a pink diamond at the heart. Small rosettes and hooked vines in olive and teal fill the red space between them. Handsome cream spandrels at the four corners hold scrolling stems and dark blossoms. The main border is cream, carrying a lovely vine of small flowers, edged by narrow guard stripes in deep red and violet. The pile is full across the face. It brings a warm red line to a passage, cooled by the cream border. At 2'11" by 7'9", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Azerbaijan rugs

In 1501 Isma’il Safavi and his Qizilbash warriors took control of Azerbaijan, and in the same year he was crowned the first Safavid shah. Persian Azerbaijan is the northwestern corner of the country. It is less a single style than a family of village traditions with a shared vocabulary of angular medallions, hooked motifs, madder and indigo. The rugs were made for houses in a cold region, not for export catalogs. This runner keeps that angular vocabulary in its three stepped medallions and the hooked vines around them. Madder red and indigo blue stand hard against the cream, creating a strong contrast across this runner. The drawing stays geometric and bold, suited to a house in a cold place.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
