About this rug

Octagonal medallions with near-black grounds run along this charming runner. Worked on a deep red field, three large octagonal medallions run down the length, each with a near-black ground that turns pale gray where it is worn. Each core holds stepped geometric forms and small hooked motifs in red, cream and rose. The field between them carries dainty scattered star rosettes, and a pair of small animal figures in near-black stands near the top. A burgundy main border runs a chain of angular leaves and squares in cream and orange. Narrow guard stripes in beige and brown edge this border along each side. The pile is worn low in the medallions and across the lower end, and the foundation shows through the pale gray patches. It grounds a narrow passage, the near-black medallions breaking the long red run. At 2'10" by 9'8", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Zanjan rugs

Soltaniyeh, in the province of Zanjan, was the capital of the Mongol Ilkhanid dynasty, and the Mausoleum of Oljaytu was built there between 1302 and 1312. Scholars have described the building as anticipating the Taj Mahal. Zanjan sits on the road between Tabriz and Hamedan in northwestern Persia, and its village weaving borrows from both. The designs are geometric and the formats run long, which is why so many Zanjan pieces are runners. These are working rugs rather than showpieces. This runner keeps that long format and the geometric drawing. Three octagonal medallions stretch down the center instead of one gathered shape, with cream and rose stepped forms in the cores.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
