About this rug

Delightful stepped medallions in salmon pink run down the center. Small flowers and bars in pink, tan and cream scatter over the deep red field. A column of stepped medallions runs down the center in salmon pink, each with a blue core and a red center, set on near-black grounds. Near-black corner pieces at each end hold small pink and tan forms. The main border is red, carrying small pink and cream flowers. Near-black bands with a cream zigzag line frame the field on each side. The pile is full. It brings a strong red line to a passage, with the salmon medallions lighting the center. At 3'4" by 10'2", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Zanjan rugs

Soltaniyeh, in the province of Zanjan, was the capital of the Mongol Ilkhanid dynasty, and the Mausoleum of Oljaytu was built there between 1302 and 1312. Its 50-meter dome, covered in turquoise-blue faience, is the earliest double-shelled dome surviving in Persia. Zanjan lies on the road between Tabriz and Hamedan in northwestern Persia, and its village weavers borrowed from both. The designs are geometric and the formats run long, so many Zanjan pieces are runners. These are working rugs, not showpieces. This piece holds that narrow shape and its angular drawing. A column of stepped medallions in salmon pink repeats down the deep red ground, framed by near-black zigzag bands.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
