About this rug

Deep indigo diamond medallions make this a remarkable rug. The deep red field carries a column of five stepped diamond medallions in deep indigo, each filled with small branching motifs in red. The central medallion holds two small cream animals facing one another. The main border is red, carrying hooked figures in deep indigo, tan and orange. Narrow guard stripes of small triangles in indigo, brown, tan and orange flank it on both sides. An outer band of small diamonds in indigo, rose and brown edges the rug. Full pile runs through the medallions and the red ground between them. It holds a long passage together, the bright red ground warming the floor while the indigo diamonds give the eye places to rest. At 3'9" by 10'2", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Zanjan rugs

Soltaniyeh, in the province of Zanjan, was the capital of the Mongol Ilkhanid dynasty, and the Mausoleum of Oljaytu was built there between 1302 and 1312. Scholars have described the building as anticipating the Taj Mahal. Zanjan lies on the road between Tabriz and Hamedan in northwestern Persia, and its village weavers borrowed from both. The designs are geometric and the formats run long, so many Zanjan pieces are runners. These are working rugs, not showpieces. This piece has that long shape, with five stepped diamonds stacked down the red field. The hooked figures in the border echo the angular outlines of the medallions. Deep indigo set against bright red gives the runner a strong, simple contrast.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
