About this rug

A beige hexagonal medallion extends stepped pendants toward the ends of this lovely rug. Set within a deep red field, geometric boteh and small rosettes scatter around a central axis. A gorgeous beige hexagonal medallion sits at the center, holding a brown core and extending stepped pendants toward the ends. The field corners carry larger angular motifs in brown and blue that mirror the central plan. A beautiful red main border runs the length, filled with brown, beige and blue blossoms. Narrow guard stripes in dark blue and brown flank this broad frame on each side. The pile is worn low across the middle, and the foundation shows through the red. The dark blue guard stripes give the long red shape a clean edge. At 3'4" by 9'1", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Zanjan rugs

Soltaniyeh, in the province of Zanjan, was the capital of the Mongol Ilkhanid dynasty, and the Mausoleum of Oljaytu was built there between 1302 and 1312. Scholars have described the building as anticipating the Taj Mahal. Zanjan sits on the road between Tabriz and Hamedan in northwestern Persia, and its village weaving borrows from both. The designs are geometric and the formats run long, which is why so many Zanjan pieces are runners. These are working rugs rather than showpieces. This piece keeps the geometric plan and the long format, with a stepped medallion and angular corner motifs set hard against the red ground. A dark blue guard stripe frames the red field, which turns paler where the pile runs low in the center.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
