Curling vines and palmettes repeat down the length of this lovely runner. Over a deep red field, charming curling vines and palmettes in sage, cream and teal repeat down the length, with small teal leaves between them. No single medallion anchors the center; instead, linked floral motifs form a continuous lattice along the runner. The main border sits on a gray ground and carries cream and rose leaf forms with small blossoms. Narrow guard stripes in cream, with teal and red flower chains, frame it on both sides. Pile runs low across the field, and the weave shows in places. Sage and teal vines cool the long red line this runner makes down a hall. At 3'3" by 9'10", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Kashan rugs
It was long the custom to bring raw silk from other places to Kashan to be spun and dyed there. Only about twenty of the silk carpets of the 1500s credited to Kashan are known to survive, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art owns four of them. The formal Persian rug is most closely tied to the central Persian city of Kashan: a central medallion, spandrels in the corners, and a field of curling vine and palmette. Saturated madder reds are what old Kashans are known for. This runner keeps the curling vine and palmette drawing of the region, stretched along the length rather than gathered at a center. Sage and cream accents pick out the fine floral lattice across the deep red field.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
