About this rug

A lattice of small navy diamond motifs makes this a lovely rug. Across a burgundy field, rows of small navy diamond motifs repeat from end to end. Each shape holds a touch of steel blue and cream against the red ground. No medallion interrupts the splendid lattice of small repeats. The main border is gray beige, carrying angular geometric figures in rust and navy. Narrow guard stripes in teal and charcoal edge the frame on either side. The pile is low in places, with white specks where the foundation shows. It holds a long passage together, the small repeats leading the eye toward the far end. At 3'3" by 10'7", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Arak rugs

The town of Arak dates only from 1808, when it was founded as Sultanabad, a name the carpet trade kept. Known historically as Sultanabad, Arak in central Persia was the center of one of the country’s largest weaving districts. Surrounding villages supplied the market under their own names, with an all-over floral field and a restrained palette as the shared character. This runner keeps that all-over character in its repeating diamond lattice, though the drawing in this piece is geometric rather than floral. The burgundy ground and the gray beige border carry the restrained palette of the district. Small steel blue accents inside each diamond add a cool note to the warm red field.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
