About this rug

Small diamond forms and rosettes repeat all over this amazing rug. A dark burgundy field is covered end to end by an all-over repeat of rosettes and small diamond forms in red, pink, orange and teal. No single medallion marks the center, and no corner pieces interrupt the pattern. The main border is cream, set with delicate red rosettes, teal and dark blue vine forms and small green leaves. Camel guard stripes, worked with tiny red and blue crosses, run along both sides of the cream band. The pile is full over the face and borders. It holds a long passage together, letting the deep ground set off the bright small notes. At 3'7" by 9'2", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Mahal rugs

The town of Arak dates only from 1808, when it was founded as Sultanabad, a name the carpet trade kept. The Swiss firm Ziegler began there in the mid-1870s with 40 looms, and by 1894 had 1,200 in the town and 1,500 more in the surrounding villages. Mahal rugs come from the villages around Arak in central Persia. This runner carries its repeat in a long narrow format, with red and pink rosettes standing out on the field. Orange and teal flowers are scattered among them, and the cream border repeats the red rosettes along both edges.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
